Rice is the basis of the Madagascan's alimentation. Here in Vohimana, the ricefields are numerous, in order to provide for all the communities.
After a few harvests, the land becomes unproductive. It's now time to look for a new parcel in the forest, cut down the wood that will be sold or turned into coal,
and burn the rest to the ground before planting rice or manioc and start all over again.
Used much too often in the forest of Vohimana, the Tavy are responsible of the destruction of acres of forest. Even though the forest is being watched and trees are being planted, it is still a serious threat.
The cyclone Hedza in 2015 and Enawo in March 2017 left a chaotic landscape behind them. Bridges have been swamped by the
rivers, the Scientists' village and the laboratory have been completely destroyed and many villagers lost their homes.
Today the scar left by cyclone Enawo is still bleeding as landslides occur repeatedly and the people's enthusiasm is down.
This is why it is important, now more than ever, to bring the people of the reserve the help they need to reconstruct their homes and build
a better future.
